She has a younger sister named Rubina Singh. Nimrat did her schooling at Delhi Public School and completed her Bachelor of Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi.

Nimrat Kaur made her film debut starring in the movie Yahaan in 2005 which she played the small role of News Anchor Interviewer. The actress appeared in the American religious epic film One Night With the King in 2006 in the role of Sarah. Then she first appeared in Hindi film Peddlers which she played the role of Kuljeet. In 2012, she worked in a Hindi comedy film Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana in the role of Muskaan Khurana.
Next year, Nimrat released her epistolary romance film The Lunchbox which played the role of Ila along with Irrfan Khan for which she was nominated for the Screen Award and IIFA Award for best actress. In 2021, the actress acted in the upcoming Hindi film Dasvi in the role of Bimla Devi.
The actress made her television debut with the American psychological spy thriller series Homeland on Showtime in 2014 which she played the role of Tasneem Qureishi. In 2016, she also appeared in the American mystery science fiction television series Wayward Pines on Fox in the role of Rebecca Yedlin.
Nimrat also acted in many short films and web series. In 2010, she acted in the Hindi short film Encounter then she appeared in another short film El’ayichi in the role of Padu. The actress made her debut web series Love Shots in 2016 in the role of Arshi, one year later she worked in another web series The Test Case which she played the role of Capt. Shikha Sharma.
