Her father Jamal Hashmi is an actor and her mother Rizwana is a school teacher. She has an elder sister named Farah Naaz who is an actress. The actress’s parents divorced when she was 4 or 5 months old, she says she never wants to see her father. Tabu studied at St. Ann’s high school, Hyderabad, and completed her graduation in Electronics from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.

Tabassum Fatima Hashmi started her career as a child artist. She made her acting debut with the Bollywood film ‘Bazaar’ in 1982. Then she appeared in another drama film ‘Hum Naujawan’ in 1985.
As an actress, Tabu played the lead role in the Telugu romantic film ‘Coolie No 1’ in 1991 along with Venkatesh. The actress made her Bollywood role in the Hindi comedy film ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ in 1993 opposite Anil Kapoor and Sridevi.
Tabu played the first lead role in the Hindi film ‘Pehla Pehla Pyar’ in 1994 alongside Rishi Kapoor. She acted with Ajay Devgn in the Hindi action film ‘Haqeeqat’ in 1995. In 1999, the actress appeared in the Hindi comedy-drama film ‘Biwi No 1’ alongside Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, and Karishma Kapoor.
Tabu released her Tamil drama film ‘Kandukondain Kandukondain’ in 2000. At the time, She released another Tamil mystery thriller film ‘Snegithiye’ along with Jyothika, Sharbani, and IshitaArun. The actress acted in the Hindi crime drama film ‘Maqbool’ in 2004 which she played the role of Nimmi alongside Irrfan, Pankaj Kapur, and Masumeh. Tabu appeared in the Hindi romantic comedy film ‘Cheeni Kum’ in 2007 which she played 34 years woman who falls in love 64 years old Amitabh Bachchan.
In 2010, the actress appeared in the Hindi romantic comedy film ‘Toh Baat Pakki!’ along with Sharman Joshi, Vatsal Sheth, Uvika, and Ayub Khan. The movie commercial huge success in the box office. One year later, the actress appeared in the Malayalam action film ‘Urumi’.
In the following year, she acted in the Hollywood adventure drama film ‘Life of Pi’ alongside Irrfan Khan, Rafe Spall, Adil Hussain, and Suraj Sharma. In 2015, Tabu released the Hindi thriller film ‘Drishyam’ along with Ajay Devgan. Two years later, Tabu acted in Rohit Shetty’s comedy film ‘Golmaal Again’, the film became a hit and she gained a positive view.
The actress appeared in the Telugu action drama film ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’ in 2019 alongside Allu Arjun and Trivikram Srinivas. Then she released the Hindi comedy-drama film ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’ along with Saif Ali Khan. In 2021, Tabu workes in the Hindi horror-comedy film ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ it is the remake of the Kannada film ‘Aptharakshaka’.
